Want to create a stylish home accent without spending much money? With a piece of cardboard, aluminum foil, and two inexpensive dollar-store supplies, you can make a rustic serving tray with a surprisingly high-end look.

The secret is layering slightly uneven strips of foil over the cardboard. The overlapping pieces create a textured metallic finish that looks intentional and decorative rather than homemade.

Rustic Foil-Textured Serving Tray
Materials
1 large rectangular piece of cardboard, approximately 18 × 12 inches
1 roll of aluminum foil
1 small bottle of Mod Podge
1 foam brush
Directions
Prepare the cardboard.
Cut the cardboard to your preferred tray size, making sure the edges are straight and clean.
Create the foil strips.
Tear the aluminum foil into strips about 2–3 inches wide. Keep some edges straight and make others slightly uneven for a more rustic, textured appearance.
Protect your work surface.
Place the cardboard on a drop cloth or another protected surface.
Apply the adhesive.
Use the foam brush to spread a thin, even layer of Mod Podge over a small section of the cardboard.
Add the foil.
Carefully place a strip of foil over the adhesive. Smooth it gently with your fingers, being careful not to tear the foil.
Build the texture.
Continue working in sections, applying Mod Podge and adding foil strips. Slightly overlap each strip so the finished surface has plenty of visual texture.
Let it dry.
Allow the tray to dry completely before handling or decorating with it. For a sturdier result, apply a thin protective coat of Mod Podge over the finished surface once the foil is firmly attached.
Easy Ways to Customize It

For a farmhouse-inspired look, paint the cardboard edges with acrylic paint in white, beige, black, or another color that complements your décor.

For a more industrial finish, you can add a light coat of silver-colored paint after the foil has dried. If you want the tray to be easier to carry, attach small drawer pulls or handles to the sides before covering the cardboard with foil.

How to Style Your Finished Tray

Place the completed tray on a wooden coffee table and fill it with neutral-colored candles, a small vase of wildflowers, or other simple decorative pieces. The reflective foil contrasts especially well with natural wood and matte textures, making the tray an eye-catching centerpiece.

The result is an inexpensive project that turns ordinary cardboard and foil into a decorative accent with plenty of rustic character.
